Algoma, WI – August 2024 - The Algoma Public Library is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded a grant to support migratory bird conservation and citizen science initiatives through the SciStarter-HHMI Flyways program. This exciting opportunity is part of a nationwide effort to engage communities in the study and preservation of bird migration routes, known as flyways.
The Flyways Citizen Science Program, a collaboration between SciStarter and HHMI Tangled Bank Studios, aims to foster leadership capacity among library staff and other community organizations in science education and citizen science. Through this program, Algoma Public Library will host and promote events featuring the acclaimed film "Flyways" and related citizen science projects that support shorebirds and other migratory species.
Algoma Public Library has been awarded $800 to support its Flyways and citizen science programming efforts. About Bird City Algoma: The Bird City Algoma Committee formed in April 2012 to work with the City of Algoma to achieve Bird City Wisconsin status. Algoma was officially recognized as a Bird City Wisconsin on May 4, 2013. Their volunteer group continues to support Algoma’s Bird City status by sponsoring projects, offering educational programs and sharing information about birding and healthy bird habitat.
About Friends of Crescent Beach: Friends of Crescent Beach (FOCB) formed as a watershed partner of the Lakeshore Natural Resource Partnership (LNRP) in May of 2015 in response to citizen concerns. Those concerns included: storm drain outfalls emptying directly onto the beach; accumulations of algae; invasive plants; loafing birds; and litter. After conducting strategic planning sessions with community leaders and other stakeholders, an all-volunteer steering committee was formed to lead the organization. FOCB advocates, educates, activates and celebrates in support of Crescent Beach, acknowledging the stewardship responsibility associated with being a Lake Michigan coastal community.
